A young man is rescued from a Satanic cult by his guardian, triggering a battle with the Angel Of Death himself.
“ALL THE DEMONS OF HELL — SUMMONED TO EARTH TO CLAIM ‘THE DEVIL’S BRIDE’!”
Cult film night BAR TRASH continues with CELLULOID JAM, an unofficial celebration of 50 years of THE ROCKY HORROR PICTURE SHOW (1975).
Charles Gray’s portrayal of The Criminologist (An Expert) in THE ROCKY HORROR PICTURE SHOW comes in for some extreme barracking from too-passionate par-tic-i-pators (“Where’s your f*cking neck?”), making the stage version of the role an exercise in expectation management! However, Gray’s pomposity gives real gravitas to the story, and reminds us of how charismatic an actor he was.
THE DEVIL RIDES OUT (1968) is a Hammer Horror production featuring Gray as a very suave Satanist, and is widely regarded as one of director Terence Fisher’s (THE CURSE OF FRANKENSTEIN, DRACULA) most accoemplished titles. The film also features horror legend Christopher Lee (see THE RETURN OF CAPTAIN INVINCIBLE elsewhere in our season!) in a rare good-guy role.
Christopher Lee gives THE DEVIL RIDES OUT added cross-over appeal, having played The Narrator in Richard O’Brien’s clumsily titled ‘Rocky Interactive Horror Show’, a point-and-click adventure game based on the stage show, released exclusively for Windows in 1999. You never know, we might even open our show with one of his heavy metal tracks…
“Fisher builds his atmosphere with uncannily precise editing, a marvellously controlled camera style, and, above all, through an astonishingly sophisticated use of colour.”
Phil Hardy, The Aurum Film Encyclopaedia
