“These Wednesday nights in this tiny bar and weird-ass films have changed my life!” – BAR TRASH audience review
“London’s most fun and informative film night” BAR TRASH continues with its 9th sensational season — CELLULOID JAM! — an unofficial celebration of 50 years of THE ROCKY HORROR PICTURE SHOW (1975).
Going back when it all began, CELLULOID JAM swims in ROCKY HORROR’s deviant DNA, from the B-movies referenced in ‘Science Fiction/Double Feature’ — the musical’s lusciously lip-synched opening number — to 1960s dance fads, body building, Tim Curry, cross-dressing, and cannibalism!
Special events include a British Horror sidequest, our annual takeover for International Women’s Day (which is a very special weekender this year!), more William Castle moviehouse gimmicks, vintage projection formats — VHS and retro 3D! — and a MYSTERY FILM (that we’ll only reveal on the night). In words from the original theatre programme for the ROCKY HORROR stage show in 1973, there really is “something for everyone” as the programme is packed with “thrills, chills and spills!”.
CELLULOID JAM started with two SOLD OUT screenings of THE ROCKY HORROR PICTURE SHOW at Genesis Cinema and continues from 15 January to 16 April 2025 with 30 sensational films across 3 amazing venues. The Opening Night film will be John Waters’ 1988 comedy, HAIRSPRAY, inspired by our enthusiastic dancing of the Time Warp, ROCKY HORROR’s musical homage to the 1950s/60s dance fads that packed dance floors with horny, time-stepping teenagers.
“ROCKY HORROR made me queer. Well, kinda… ROCKY HORROR gave me the courage to be queer. My friends and I watched THE ROCKY HORROR PICTURE SHOW an inordinate number of times on VHS at sleepovers and slumber parties throughout the mid to late 1980s. Not so much a bible, more of a route map to our emerging queerdom. As we were young, it wasn’t easy to see midnight screenings in London, but clad in our PJs, and singing whilst under the powerful influence of booze stolen from the back of parent’s drinks cabinets, the show shaped our outlook on life and how we were determined to live it. Coming of age in a turbulent decade, the queer cacophony of ROCKY HORROR — on stage and screen, on VHS, vinyl, and cassette — was an essential part of my survival strategy. I owe it so much.”
