“THIS IS YOUR BRAIN ON ANIME!”
A machine that allows therapists to enter their patients’ dreams is stolen by terrorists, and all hell breaks loose. Only psychologist Dr Atsuko Chiba – and her dreamworld persona, Paprika – can save the day.
Acclaimed director Satoshi Kon’s PAPRIKA is a film of superabundant visual story telling, pitch-perfect sci-fi, and drumming frogs. Based on the 1993 novel by Japanese author Yasutaka Tsutsui, PAPRIKA was polymath Kon’s final film, released in 2006 before his untimely death in 2010.
Satoshi Kon left behind an outstanding legacy of four groundbreaking anime films, including PERFECT BLUE (1997), MILLENNIUM ACTRESS (2001), and last year’s Christmas special, TOKYO GODFATHERS (2003). If you haven’t seen any of them, hold on for a wild ride… PAPRIKA is a metaphysical mindf*ck, and the perfect way to end our series of ANIME CLASSICS at Rule Zero.
Polite notice: PAPRIKA contains scenes of sexual assault and fat-shaming.
ANIME CLASSICS is a celebration of Japanese animation, hosted by queer film fanatic Token Homo (BAR TRASH). All films screen in Japanese with English subtitles and an introduction. Tickets £3.
