BAR TRASH celebrates our 3rd year and 10th sensational season with WE ARE TRASH!, a fan-made mixtape of cult and chaotic cinema (14 May to 20 Aug 2025). This season, we’re proud to bring you our largest number of BAR TRASH titles directed by women — 10 in total! — continuing with a double-bill of Mary Lambert’s brilliant back-to-back Stephen King horror stories, PET SEMATARY 1 + 2 (1989 + 1992)!

“SOMETIMES, SO IT SEEMS, DEAD IS BETTER.”

PET SEMATARY dir Mary Lambert (1989/USA/103mins)

With a screenplay by Stephen King from his novel, Mary Lambert’s PET SEMATARY is among the most beloved adaptations of the legendary horror author’s work. PET SEMATARY follows the tragic story of the Creed family. After their cat is accidentally killed, a neighbour advises its burial in a mysterious nearby cemetery. When the cat comes back, it’s only the beginning of an unthinkable evil leading to hell and back. A major box office smash, Lambert’s film is ”strikingly well-told” (Monthly Film Bulletin) and “captures the dark and twisted heart of King’s 1983 novel and… still packs a mean punch more than thirty years later” (Dread Central).

PET SEMATARY TWO dir Mary Lambert (1992/USA/100mins)

Keen to keep pace with the original’s success, Mary Lambert was asked to direct a sequel but the studio rejected her idea to continue the story with surviving family member Ellie Creed. Instead, they cast Edward Furlong after his rapid rise to fame in TERMINATOR 2. The film follows another family that buries their pet dog in local Indian burial grounds, only to realise that sometimes you really should just let dogs die. After Stephen King had his name removed, it’s fair to say the sequel has its detractors, but for many this overlooked oddity is as savagely brilliant as Lambert’s first part: “PET SEMATARY TWO goes for horror in its most visceral form while navigating a quirky, gritty, Twin Peaks-y small town… But that’s why I love it so much” (Den Of Geek).

PET SEMATARY was shot and set in Stephen King’s home state of Maine. We hope to be serving some delicious Maine-brewed beers to accompany the film. Stay tuned for updates!

Polite notice: We are showing PET SEMATARY 1 + 2 with subtitles from the best available digital source.
