Meek mop boy Melvin falls into a vat of toxic waste. Now evildoers will have a lot to lose.
“HE WAS 98LBS. OF SOLID NERD UNTIL HE BECAME… THE TOXIC AVENGER!”
Cult film night BAR TRASH continues with its 11th sensational season — SYNTHETIC FLESH! — a tribute to more than 100 years of monster makeup FX.
Lloyd Kaufman’s THE TOXIC AVENGER (1984) stands with PINK FLAMINGOS and THE EVIL DEAD as one of the most gleefully offensive “midnight movies” of the twentieth century.
The film established Troma Entertainment’s warped modus operandi, but few people in 1984 would have imagined this “silly, sleazy, and graphically violent” (TV Guide) origin story would have launched a global franchise of 3 sequels, a TV series (TOXIC CRUSADERS), a computer game (on the NES, Game Boy and Sega Mega Drive), and even a stage musical. Take this opportunity to revisit Lloyd Kaufman’s outrageous original as the splendid 2023 remake mops up at the box office.
Special makeup effects artist Jennifer Aspinall is a two-time Emmy Award winner (for PAM & TOMMY and MADTV) and serial nominee for TV work including SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE, the Oscars, and WALK THE PRANK. Her early career in low-budget horror has featured at BAR TRASH before with SPOOKIES (1986) and includes another outrageous cult classic with a recent remake, STREET TRASH (1987).
Polite notice: We are projecting the 2023 Director’s Cut of THE TOXIC AVENGER with subtitles from the best available digital source. Please be warned, this film was designed to offend…
