Cult film night BAR TRASH continues our 13th sensational season — SCREAM FOR YOUR LIVES! — with Hammer Horror’s first foray into colour and the first of their film series based on Mary Shelley’s groundbreaking novel, THE CURSE OF FRANKENSTEIN (1957).

Directed by Terence Fisher, the film stars Peter Cushing and Christopher Lee in two of their most iconic roles, as Victor Frankenstein (Cushing) recounts his failed attempt at creating the perfect human (Lee). THE CURSE OF FRANKENSTEIN’s massive box office success would firmly establish ‘Hammer’ as a global brand of Gothic cinema, leading to several sequels and Hammer’s versions of DRACULA and THE MUMMY.

We are showing THE CURSE OF FRANKENSTEIN fully uncensored — including the infamous “eyeball” scene — and restored in the lurid glory of Eastman Colour. Eastman Colour was developed as a cheaper alternative to Technicolor using a ‘single strip’ process and would help revolutionise colour as the default film stock globally. Its use here adds to the film’s reputation as the “first really gory horror film, showing blood and guts in colour” (Patricia MacCormack).
