“A demon-spirit of madness and murder holds a California town in the grip of terror!”

BAR TRASH launches our 12th sensational season — SATANIC PANIC! — with THE BROTHERHOOD OF SATAN (1971), an atmospheric tale of devil worship in small town USA.

The ‘Satanic Panic’ of the 1980s sought to blame societal shifts on the widespread worshipping of Satan, imagining demonic cults cavorting behind closed doors and sensing the Devil’s corrupting influence in everything from Heavy Metal lyrics, to RPGs and even Saturday morning cartoons.

A low-budget American horror film about a coven of Satanic witches in rural California, THE BROTHERHOOD OF SATAN exploits fascination with the occult after ROSEMARY’S BABY (1968) and publication of William Peter Blatty’s ‘The Exorcist’. Complete with possessed toys, Satanic rituals, and demonic children, THE BROTHERHOOD OF SATAN serves as a perfect introduction to the outlandish fever-dreams of the subsequent era’s conservative crusaders. It even credits Anton LaVey — the IRL founder of the Church of Satan — as a creative consultant.

To celebrate launch night, BAR TRASH host Token Homo will re-create the film’s original promotional gimmick that saw moviegoers receiving packets of ‘Satan’s Soul Seeds’ with the film’s logo and instructions about planting seeds to protect yourself from evil. He will also unveil the full SATANIC PANIC! programme of 16 feature films (screening 18 January to 12 April 2026).

Polite notice: We are projecting THE BROTHERHOOD OF SATAN with subtitles from the best available digital source. Certificated ‘X’ on its UK theatrical release in 1971 (strictly for adult audiences only!), THE BROTHERHOOD OF SATAN features “strong injury detail and violence” according to the BBFC.
