An animated science fiction anthology produced by visionary manga artist, screenwriter, animator and film director, Katsuhiro Otomo. Based on three of Otomo’s manga short stories, MEMORIES has been ranked amongst the 100 greatest anime productions of all time by Animage Magazine. According to The Anime Encyclopaedia (Clements & McCarthy, 2015), the first story, Kōji Morimoto’s MAGNETIC ROSE, “is one of the triumphs of all anime” and the final story, Otomo’s CANNON FODDER, “is a masterpiece”.
Token Homo’s view: “I’m excited to be launching this new season of nine films on Halloween as MEMORIES starts with one of the greatest modern ghost stories (set in space!) – the baroquely operatic MAGNETIC ROSE (directed by Kōji Morimoto and animated by Studio 4°C). STINK BOMB (directed by Tensai Okamura and animated by Madhouse) is an exercise in comedic body horror, and CANNON FODDER (written/directed by Katsuhiro Otomo and animated by Studio 4 °C) takes us to a dystopian world of perpetual war with some truly harrowing visual storytelling.”
ANIME CLASSICS is a celebration of Japanese animation, hosted by queer film fanatic Token Homo (BAR TRASH). All films screen in Japanese with English subtitles and an introduction. Tickets £3.
