“A BEAST MORE FRIGHTENING THAN YOUR MOST TERRIFYING NIGHTMARE!”
A meteor that crashed into Oregon’s Crater Lake unearths a dinosaur egg. The heat from the meteor causes the egg to hatch, and the emerging dinosaur takes to snacking on the locals.
William R. Stromberg’s THE CRATER LAKE MONSTER (1977) relocates the Loch Ness Monster to Oregon and features early-career work from many of Hollywood’s special effects maestros, including stop-motion genius Phil Tippett (JURASSIC PARK, MAD GOD).
A curious hybrid of kaijū horror and hillbilly comedy, THE CRATER LAKE MONSTER ran into serious money trouble during production leading to shortcuts and cutbacks. Key sequences were then lost and the unfinished film was rushed into drive-ins. It has never been released in the UK.
Token Homo’s view: “This curious film takes us right back to the origins of Bar Trash – low-budget, self-made horror from the fringes of mainstream film production. THE CRATER LAKE MONSTER will be fun to watch with a crowd (and a few drinks…) but by asking ‘where are they now?’ we can also tell the origin story of modern movie special effects.”
Please note there won’t be subtitles/captions for this film.
BAR TRASH is a celebration of cult and curious cinema, hosted by Token Homo. All films screen with introductions, intermissions, prize giveaways, themed drinks and subtitles/captions (where possible!). We aim to end the show by 11pm (timings can vary!). Tickets £3.
