“TERRIFYING MONSTER OF THE AGES RAGING WITH PENT-UP PASSIONS! … WITH EVERY MAN HIS MORTAL ENEMY! … AND A WOMAN’S BEAUTY HIS PREY!”
A group of scientists try to capture an ancient prehistoric beast they discover in the depths of the Amazon rainforest. The creature has other ideas…
Returning for a 70th anniversary screening, CREATURE FROM THE BLACK LAGOON is an eco-horror pioneer that introduced the last of the Universal classic monsters. It was also the most popular film requested by BAR TRASH audiences for a repeat screening in our 2nd birthday season.
When we first screened Jack Arnold’s 1954 creature feature, audience reviews celebrated the beauty of the underwater encounters between woman and beast, and the (curiously…) homoerotic beefcake battle between two male leads. There was a lot of thirst for the lonely Gill-Man too…
The Gill-Man was designed and painted by Milicent Patrick who was also one of the first female animators at Disney. Her role in CREATURE FROM THE BLACK LAGOON was downplayed by Universal make-up department boss Bud Westmore who was resentful of her popularity following the film’s promotional press tour. Mallory O’Meara’s brilliant book ‘The Lady from the Black Lagoon: Hollywood Monsters and the Lost Legacy of Milicent Patrick’ tells the story of Patrick’s life and exposes toxicity in the film industry today. We’ll be giving away a copy during the interval!
”A classic horror that warms the heart and wets the pants.”
Kim Newman, Empire Magazine
