QUEER MONSTROSITY

Once again, Picturehouse Central opens its doors all night long for seven unmissable movie marathons complete with special hosts, big surprises, and more. I’m hosting an epic night of queer horror mayhem called QUEER MONSTROSITY in celebration of Pride Month!

Monsters have long been cinema’s queer cyphers — the feared other! — but they also represent our ferocious queer selves as we fight back against oppression. This night of deviant horror — both unintentionally and audaciously queer — is our collective call to action.

You’re invited to ‘Bring Your Freak’ with a costume competition (prizes for best look!) and a sleeping bag slug monster makeover workshop (bring your own sleeping bag, all other materials provided!).

The QUEER MONSTROSITY programme features the following sensational titles:

NIGHTBREED: DIRECTOR’S CUT (1990)

Pride starts with an uprising, and queer filmmaker Clive Barker’s dark fantasy about a himbo discovering his subterranean queer family is the Stonewall Riot of monster movies.

REVENGE OF THE CREATURE 3D (1955)

Swim in the dangerous waters of overlooked sequels with this 1950s B&W horror show where Universal’s horny Gill-Man resurfaces from the Black Lagoon to resist conversion therapy and battle toxic beefcake (all in glorious 3D!).

HALLUCINATIONS (1986)

How do you create maximalist horror cinema in your bedroom whilst your parents are downstairs having a dinner party? These are the teenage emissions of 1980s shot-on-video enfants terribles John and Mark Polonia, and their gay best pal, Todd Michael Smith.

THE GREEN SLIME (1968)

Our queer selves aren’t fixed and this spectacular 1960s sci-fi catastrophe — about space goo attacking the patriarchy! — is a chaotic serving of shape-shifting practical FX and the ULTIMATE movie theme song.

We end our night with a plant-based apocalypse, a radical reworking of the much-loved movie musical where heteronormativity is gleefully defeated and Audrey II might just be horror cinema’s first Black Trans Final Girl. Feel free to sing-along!
